Abstract

In 2014, Fred Swaniker has suggested that the training of a new class of leaders is the decisive step for African development. He has founded the African Leadership University (ALU), an excellence network with the mission of building 25 innovative campuses across Africa in the next decades. The first campus was opened in Mauritius in 2015, and the second this year in Rwanda. The model of these campuses is strongly pan-African. Students are purposely selected homogeneously across the 54 countries of Africa, to address and foster cultural diversity. There is strong emphasis on soft skills such as verbal and written communication, team work, and project management. All degree programs include a mandatory first year (“Leadership Core”) with courses on soft skills only. I will present my experience with the degree program in Electrical Engineering, and my vision on building partnerships between ALU and European universities and companies.
