Abstract

In this lecture we present some results concerning the fabrication of novel flexible optical layers by radio frequency sputtering deposition techniques. In particular, 1D photonic crystals and planar waveguides will be discussed both passive and activated by rare earth ions. The general idea is to develop a viable technological way to transform intrinsically rigid or brittle materials into highly mechanically flexible and optically functional systems.
