"Light - Lamps - Luminescence - from basic research to applications"

Claudia Wickleder
School of Science and Technology University of Siegen,
Germany

Abstract
The development of new optical materials is currently a hot topic also with respect of energy saving purposes. In fact this is shown by the drastic change in lightening techniques in Europe, changing from incandescent lamps over discharge lamps to modern LEDs, which energy balance is improved compared to former lamps. However, the development of suitable materials for these applications is necessary. In this presentation, promising candidates in this context with very high efficiencies, suitable emission energies and low excitation energies, which are crucial for energy saving will be introduced. Furthermore, some respective nanoparticles will be presented which are useful for applications as medical markers or to investigate the toxicity of nanoparticles.
